Share This!Greetings! TouringPlans.com Blog Manager Brian here to welcome you to the continuation of TBT: Throwback Thanksgiving week here on the blog. All this week we will be revisiting a few wonderful Thanksgiving-related posts from the past. This wonderful entry from 2015 highlighting the six things that Derek Burgan gave thanks for during that year.Make sure you come back Thursday at 9:00am for this years items to give thanks for! This week’s SATURDAY SIX is our annual Thanksgiving Special and takes a look at Six Reasons for Theme Park Fans to Give Thanks. 2015 was another great year to be a theme park fan, and for this Thanksgiving we are going to take a quick break from all the turkey, football games, and Black Friday planning to count our blessings and thank the parks and resorts we love so much. So, for one day only, we ask that all Disney and Universal fans put aside their differences and spend a moment appreciating all the wonderful things that we can share together, starting with…# 6 – Selfie Stick Ban at Walt Disney WorldIf you noticed any #Millenials or narcissists wearing black armbands this summer, it was because after banning selfie sticks on Disney attractions earlier in the spring, Walt Disney World completely banned the use of selfie sticks at the parks. Seemingly out of nowhere, the edict came down right after another high profile news story of Disney California Adventure’s California Screamin’ roller coaster being stopped mid ride because of a guest using a selfie stick. On June 26th, WDW guests were given a pamphlet at the parking plaza explaining the selfie stick ban, signage was displayed on the walkways to the parks along with bag check explaining the new policy. The selfie stick ban was definitely a controversial move to be sure. Universal had earlier become more strict on preventing selfie sticks on rides, but Disney outright stopped people from even entering the park with them. Now we joked earlier about only kids and narcissists using them, the truth is that selfie sticks have become increasingly popular across almost all demographics. While people using selfie sticks inside the parks can be a nuisance, they were starting to become a serious safety factor on attractions. You may have seen what is called an Envelope of Protection as Imagineers test out the attractions. This device makes sure that all the attractions are safe for every rider, basically simulating the possible reach of every guest in the ride vehicle. This is why while it may seem like your may lose your arms in Space Mountain if you hold them up during the ride, but in actuality you are nowhere close to hitting anything. What the Envelope of Protection doesn’t take into account though, is guests holding on to anything that extends their reach.–# 5 – Sharknado 3 at Universal Orlando ResortWhen it was announced that the film Sharknado 3 would be filming at Universal Orlando Resort, we here at the SATURDAY SIX were more than a little excited. We love anything – movies or TV – filmed inside the theme parks, and we also happen to love the campiness of the Sharknado series. This was like when chocolate met peanut butter, when pepperoni met pizza, or Misson: SPACE met EPCOT (well, maybe not the last one). The Sharknado crew filmed at the Universal resort for a couple days, so we hoped for at least a couple minutes of footage would make the final movie.Turns out almost half the film takes place either directly within the Universal Orlando Resort, or using locations shot in Universal but substituted for somewhere else, such as the last scene of the movie being shot on the beach of the Royal Pacific Resort. While watching the movie we felt like that kid from The Incredibles, trying to pick our jaws off the floor. TONS of footage took place in Universal Studios Florida, CityWalk, and the Cabana Bay Beach Resort. There was an extended sequence of the film using the Rip Ride Rockit coaster, and an even better moment when the characters in the film got into the iconic Universal Globe only to be swept up by the Sharknado and dropped onto the Pharoh’s Lighthouse outside Islands of Adventure!Last year the movie Escape From Tomorrow received a lot of buzz because of it was secretly filmed inside the Disney parks. Unfortunately trying to get through that film was an exercise in torture. Sharknado 3 meanwhile was a complete tongue-in-cheek blast. The movie is in on the fun and delivers on everything it promises and then some.A Sharknado approaches Universal Studios Florida’s Rip Ride Rockit. The stars of Sharknado 3, Cassie Scerbo and Ian Ziering, protect themselves from the Sharknado by getting into the iconic Universal globe. The Sharknado dropped the Universal glove on top of the Islands of Adventure lighthouse. It arrived with little fanfare, but it immediately became a big success with guests. While no one can touch Disney in the area of amazing meet and greets, Universal now has several that are well worth going out of your way to experience, including the Transformers and Spider-Man. Even better, the Raptor Encounter is here to stay as we have seen several popular meet and greets at WDW (Baymax and Hiro from Big Hero 6 along with Wreck It Ralph) leave the parks because the financial support was coming from the film division. More dinosaurs? Life did find a way after all.Raptor brian careyraptor (brian carey)Smile! (photo by Mike Sperduto)–# 3 – Disney Springs Phase 1The years-in-the-making changeover from Downtown Disney to Disney Springs has tested our patience, but the tide has finally turned. We are now closer to the finish than the start and there are some absolutely AWESOME elements already. Just getting into Disney Springs and getting a parking spot is approximately 2,000,000 times easier and less stressful. Morimoto Asia is already one of our favorite restaurants at WDW. Soon they will be offering a quick service option and we’re hoping Tempura Oreos are on the menu. The BOATHOUSE is a restaurant that would fit in at any Disney park or resort and we can’t give it higher praise. It’s like Rainforest Cafe for adults. Wonderful theming and a fantastic menu (not to mention the dessert YOU MUST GET). Jock Lindsey’s Hanger Bar is better than it has any right to be considering it’s last minute change in theming. The new bridge connecting T-Rex to Rainforest Cafe? Great. Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC offering vegan ice cream? Incredible.Everything so far at Disney Springs has been pitch perfect, and we can’t wait for Phase 2.Morimoto Asia. Wear cute uniforms.(photo by Brandon Glover)–# 2 – ALL THE GREAT ANNOUNCEMENTS!It’s a great time to be a theme park fan today, but you know what’s going to be even better? Tomorrow. Well, maybe not tomorrow, but it won’t be long before we are experiencing Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (along with even more rumored Pixar stuff. Knock on wood). Universal is ready to take on Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon with its Volcano Bay water theme park. Fresh off another Billion dollar Fast & Furious film this past summer comes Fast & Furious Supercharged to Universal Studios Florida as well as a Jimmy Fallon attraction. SeaWorld is beginning its road back to reclaiming a top spot in the Orlando market with the new Mako rollercoaster. Oh, and there was a little announcement made of NINTENDO COMING TO UNIVERSAL.Concept art for Star Wars Land. (photo courtesy of Disney)Concept Art for Toy Story Land. (photo by Mike Sperduto and Drew of OU)–# 1 – Trader Sam’s Grog GrottoThe first E-Ticket bar has arrived in Walt Disney World. Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto opened at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in the spring and was an immediate smash. With an ultra-themed interior that rivals its counterpart Trader Sam’s Tiki Hut in Disneyland, the Grog Grotto has spectacular show elements and is at the top of its class when it comes to souvenir mugs. The bar is so popular it generally has a wait, however the Tiki Terrace waiting area outside not only offers live music, it also features a drink you can only get out there (more on that next month in December in our 25 Drinks of Christmas series). The Grog Grotto is not just a home run, it’s a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth that wins the seventh game of the World Series. OH-UA!A Pearl at the Grog Grotto. In other words, web hosting (a foundation technology for web apps and websites) is itself being transformed by Web technology. Media Temple calls this ‘Virtualization Technology’ – and I’m sure this trend is happening on other web hosting services too. It means for example that users have Web-based remote start/stop/reboot capabilities. Here’s how Media Temple explains the difference between a a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual server and a (dpv) Dedicated-Physical Virtual Server (a.k.a. Nitro):“While a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server has guaranteed resources and everything is isolated, it still “lives” on a host server that controls other virtual servers on the same hardware. To contrast, a (dpv) utilizes the full allocation of hardware resources on its own host machine. The (dpv) is a single-tenant platform as opposed to the (dv), which is a multi-tenant platform at the hardware level.”Meanwhile the difference between the (dpv) and a regular dedicated physical server is the “layer of virtualization”, which essentially allows you to control your server in the browser, through a point-and-click interface. ConclusionThe whole virtualization trend is an exciting aspect of today’s Web – we’ve been tracking it with WebOS products. And as Nitro shows, virtualization is also transforming the business of web hosting. Disclosure: Read/WriteWeb is hosted on Media Temple. Media Temple, which hosts Read/WriteWeb, is announcing a brand new product at Hosting Con in Chicago this coming Tuesday evening PST. It’s called the Nitro and Read/WriteWeb is the first to bring you this news. Nitro is a Dedicated Physical Virtual Server (dpv), but it comes with the same virtualization technology that powers their virtual dedicated server solutions (dv). R/WW is currently hosted on the Grid Server, although we’re being migrated to a Dedicated Virtual server (we discovered the hard way that we need a DV). With our current growth patterns, the Nitro will be the next move. And the idea with Nitro is to make such migrations easy for the customer and seamless, even if they have customized their dv setup. As MediaTemple told me, the Nitro makes “hardware upgrades less painful and more organic like asoftware upgrade, instead of having to manually configure the new box.”Nitro is also easily stackable, says Media Temple, and so it can scale to “mammoth proportions”. So this kind of hosting solution is good for social apps and sites; for example MySkitch (the online photo editing/sharing platform) already uses it. Tags:#web
Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#Mashups#web marshall kirkpatrick Related Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Japanese media-wiki company Nota offers a service called C-Shirt, a fascinating combination of technologies and concepts unlike anything we’ve seen before. The company sells t-shirts like Threadless or scads of other online vendors, but with a serious twist. It’s a t-shirt, but with a mobile scannable code, wiki-like editing and a CreativeCommons license. How it WorksC-Shirt shirts each come with a scannable little QR (Quick Response) code in the corner. If you see a C-Shirt that you like, worn by someone walking around town, you can scan the QR code with your mobile phone. (Especially if you’re in Japan where people scan QR codes with their phones all the time.) Your phone then captures the shirt’s unique URL on the Nota website, where you can load it up and edit the design however you like. Each design is given a Creative Commons license (that’s what the C stands for) according to the wishes of the creator. Once you’ve got it how you like it, you can have it shipped to you just like any other T-shirt website would do.The Nota publishing platform does more than just C-shirts, too.It Works In JapanIt’s a fascinating concept that might or might not translate well to other cultures and places. Few phones in the US, for example, are capable of scanning in codes with native mobile software. Everyone’s phone can in Japan though. I spent last week in Tokyo, courtesy of Portland, Oregon company Lunarr, and saw QR codes intended for mobile scanning everywhere I went. Posters advertising things on the subway, for example, used QR codes to make it easy to follow up online.Powerful mobile phones were all over Japan and most of the startups, investors and government officials I met there were heavily focused on the mobile sector. People make their purchases from vending machines by swiping their mobile phones past the machines and automatically paying by debit. A bigger obstacle to the success of a project like C-Shirt in the US though might be cultural. People here at least think that we are each unique. Copying someone’s t-shirt, even with alterations, might not appeal to many people in the US. I’ve even heard people ask why they would want to buy the most popular t-shirts on Rumplo, which is like Digg for shirts. T-shirt InspirationEither way, the idea of C-shirt is totally cool just to think about. Had you ever considered such a possibility? I certainly hadn’t. Maybe mobile wiki Creative Commons t-shirts could catch on all around the world! At the very least they are another example of innovation going on far from Silicon Valley. If you’re interested in reading more about web innovation in Asia, check out OpenWeb Asia, a project we wrote about yesterday.
Gucci is ready to send a message to all the websites that are selling products that look “virtually identical” to the real deal. According to WWD, Gucci is suing more than three dozen websites that are selling knock-off items like shoes, accessories, and clothes. In their lawsuit which was filed on Thursday in a Flordia Federal Court, they say that the websites are essentially black market sellers who are registered in the US and overseas.“The exponential growth of counterfeiting over the Internet has created an environment that requires companies, such as Gucci, to file a large number of lawsuits, often it later turns out, against the same individuals and groups, in order to protect both consumers and itself from the ill effects of confusion and the erosion of the goodwill associated with the Gucci brand,” the company said in the suit.- Sponsor – Gucci is looking to spend “significant monetary resources” to stop the selling of counterfeit items and has reportedly asked for $2 million for each counterfeit item the web sites sold. Along with the hefty price request, Gucci has filed for restraining orders and injunctions to block the companies from selling alleged counterfeit Gucci products… Hollywood Unlocked Stay UpdatedGet critical information for loss prevention professionals, security and retail management delivered right to your inbox. Have you been wanting to learn Hadoop, but have no idea how to get started? Carlo Scarioni has a basic Hadoop tutorial that covers installing Hadoop, creating a Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), moving files into HDFS, and creating a simple Hadoop application. The tutorial also introduces the basic concepts of Map Reduce. It doesn’t, however, get into distributing the application, which is the main point of using Hadoop in the first place. Scarioni leaves that to a future tutorial. But if you want to get your feet wet with Hadoop and/or Map Reduce, this seems like a pretty good place to start.also gives us a pretty concise explanation of what Hadoop is:Hadoop is an open source project for processing large datasets in parallel with the use of low level commodity machines.Hadoop is build on two main parts. An special file system called Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the Map Reduce Framework. The HDFS File System is an optimized file system for distributed processing of very large datasets on commodity hardware. The map reduce framework works in two main phases to process the data. Which are the Map phase and the Reduce phase.See also: The Rise of the Data Scientist. Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 28 Apr 2015 – No national convention, but a two day special congress was held on the weekend by the governing Progressive National Party and now the party has a new constitution. National Chairman, Trevor Cooke told Magnetic Media that the country should brace for a more modern PNP. On the agenda at the Friday and Saturday closed door sessions were the ratification of the PNP new constitution, which was presented since March 2014 and the party nominated and elected a new Public Relations Director; that post went to Savitri Daniels. The new constitution embraces new legislation governing political parties. Cooke said: “We have a new progressive and modern Party constitution that complies fully with certain legislation governing the activities of political parties in the Islands; that accommodates the introduction of the new all island districts; that makes provision for a modern structure of the Party at local and national levels and that makes its terms readily accessible to all Members of the Progressive National Party.” There was strong attendance too according to the PNP Chairman; he told me “Members of each constituency councils, Party Trustees, Former Party Leaders, Stalwarts, president of the women’s arm of the PNP, president of the youth arm and members of the PNP elected to Parliament were all there and that a National General Council is set for July when the Party By-Laws will be on the agenda, with a National Executive Council planned for November. At this November session, all party positions will be open to challenge including the leadership and chairmanship of the PNP. What is said in that police report is that around 4am on Monday, three males awakened the man whose bedroom door was kicked in.The man was held at gun point, he was tied up – hands behind the back, and that again a gun was placed at the man’s head and a knife to his throat as the trio demanded money. Magnetic Media is told the suspects were looking to get the church’s collection from Sunday. The room of the house, where all of this went down, was ransacked and electronics and a Silver Chevrolet Captiva Jeep was stolen. The three, dressed in dark colored clothing escaped in the stolen vehicle which has now been recovered.A firestorm of views are being expressed about the outrageous and bodacious crime surge in the country since this news broke of the beloved Bishop with the Baptist Union being robbed in such a fierce manner.Thankfully, no one was hurt according to Police.
