Now is the time to apply The Florida Bar is now accepting applications from lawyers interested in serving on a judicial nominating commission. “Like the Marines, we are looking for a few good people,” said Richard Tanner, chair of the Bar’s JNC Screening Committee, which is tasked with providing the Board of Governor with the names of six lawyers to fill two vacancies on each of the state’s 26 JNCs. Each appointee will serve a four-year term, commencing July 1, 2010.Cognizant of Gov. Charlie Crist’s call for diversity, Tanner encourages lawyers who fit that bill to submit their names for consideration.“Diversity is a critical component of the reviewing process, and it would be very helpful if the members of The Florida Bar recognize that we are specifically pursuing diversity, and that those who can offer that as part of the program should be enthused about participating, this year in particular, perhaps,” said Tanner, noting diversity takes into account geographic, gender, ethnic, and racial differences.Tanner said it is of the utmost importance for good lawyers to avail themselves to JNC service, because it is so important to select good judges.“There is more public interaction with judges on a regular basis than probably the two other branches of government,” he said. “So the process by which the judiciary is selected is extremely important.”Tanner said while the application for JNC service is thorough, it is important for those wanting to serve to take their time and provide the screening committee with a complete picture of themselves.“The applications are all read and reviewed multiple times, and they are taken very seriously,” said Tanner, who also serves on the Board of Governors. “This is not a time to be particularly shy with respect to your personal experiences.“The governor seems to think a great deal of the quality of the screening process we have applicants submit to,” Tanner said.Applicants must be engaged in the practice of law and a resident of the territorial jurisdiction served by the commission to which the member is applying. Applicants must comply with state financial disclosure laws. Commissioners are not eligible for state judicial office for vacancies filled by the JNC on which they sit for two years following completion of their four-year term. The screening committees will review and rate all JNC applicants and present them to the Bar’s Executive Committee, which will make recommendations to the Board of Governors.Persons interested in applying for any of these vacancies may download the proper application from the Bar’s Web site, or should call Bar headquarters at (850) 561-5757, to obtain the application. Completed applications must be received by the Executive Director, The Florida Bar, 651 East Jefferson Street, Tallahassee 32399-2300 by February 26.Those serving on the JNC screening committees include: Supreme Court Screening Committee: Richard Tanner, chair, Arnell Bryant-Willis, Jay Cohen, Stephen Echsner, Clif McClelland, Edwin Scales, and L.
