It’s understandable that Angels owner Arte Moreno would want to have Los Angeles in the name of his baseball team. There’s much cachet that comes with the association of the country’s second-largest city and, arguably, its most fabulous metropolis. But the city of Anaheim, which is suing Moreno for breach of contract based on the team’s new name of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, has a valid point. The trial on the lawsuit began last week, and city officials claim to have lost more than $100 million in tourism revenue and publicity because of the name change. Companies pay millions to have their names associated with a sports team. If Staples Center suddenly became the Office Depot Staples Center there would be no question to the breach of contract. Perhaps the judge will suggest the obvious common-sense solution: If Moreno wants his team to be the Los Angeles Angels, he should just move it to Los Angeles.
