“Think Outside the Box!”

first_imgThat is probably the most annoying idiom! Just say what you mean!Say something like,“Let’s try to come up with some creative ideas;” or“Let’s think unconventionally on this particular one;” or“A fresh, new perspective is welcome here!” or…almost anything else but talking about a box. Creepy.Anyway, we get it. The box is metaphor. It represents the careful, conventional, mundane, safe, boring, and the cautious, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. There is room for conventional thinking…and caution, safety, etc. There are times it makes sense to be cautious and to use the proven strategies – the tried and true. After all, it’s better safe than sorry! If you ever find yourself between the devil and the deep blue sea, it is better to go with the devil you know than the devil you don’t know, especially since a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.So if it makes so much sense thinking INSIDE the box, then why think OUTSIDE of it at all? Well, you already know: No risk, no return. You may need new results. You may need better and different methods, systems, products, services. You may have to throw caution to the wind. Good things happen when we think unconventionally, from a different point-of-view.So what do we do then? Which one do we use?I say use BOTH! They balance each other, not cancel each other.Too much risk can result in absolute loss. No risk at all can have the same result! So, roll with the punches! And be sure to throw some of your own!Roll the dice. Just be sure you’re in a game you’re not likely to lose.last_img
